James Thompson opened Thompsons Lighting as an electrical hardware store on Upper Main Street, Larne, Northern Ireland in 1945 and it was run by the family until 1993 before being taken over by a local businessman, John McIlroy.

John managed the shop for 19 years before it was taken over by Derek and Irene McGookin in December 2012.
